RE-PRESENTING THE PAST: THE CASE OF PIONEER PASTOR CLAUS L. CLAUSEN
With Jostein Garcia de Presno, PhD; co-hosted with NAHA-Norway
Clausen was a pioneer pastor among Norwegian immigrants in the Upper Midwest. He has a long list of merits, such as being co-founder of the Norwegian Synod, being thei first editor of Emigranten, founding the town of St. Ansgar, and participating as a chaplain among Scandinavians in the civil war. But originally he had intended to become a missionary to "the heathen." What made him change his mind? New findings of diaries of letters from Clausen from before his immigration shed light on his decision to emigrate to the United States.
